Six weeks before Primary Election, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors will decide Tuesday on reducing the budget for the Elections Department, and eliminating some jobs. The personnel allocation had been increased for the labor-intensive task of hand counting ballots until a state law banned the practice. As machine assisted tallies require less staff, more than $400,000 may be returned to the General Fund. It requires the votes of at least 4 of the 5 supervisors.
