Tehama County DA Clears Red Bluff Police After Man Dies During Struggle With Officers

Law enforcement has been cleared of blame in the death of a 44-year-old man who was being taken into custody in Red Bluff. On the morning of June 16th officers investigating a stolen bicycle report were placing Gary Eagle under arrest in a dirt lot at the corner of North Main Street and Highway 36, and there was a lengthy struggle. After being handcuffed, Eagle soon showed signs of medical distress. Officers attempted CPR and called for medical help, but Eagle could not be revived and was declared dead at the scene. The Tehama County District Attorney’s Office says the medical examiners report shows that Eagle’s death resulted from multiple serious pre-existing medical conditions, acute Methamphetamine intoxication and the physical exertion of struggling with police.
