Train Hauling Grain Derails Near Dunsmuir

A freight train derailed on the Cantara Loop south of Dunsmuir Sunday evening. Three grain hopper cars tipped onto their sides while other cars jumped the track. Each of the grain hoppers weighs about 255,000 Pounds. Specialized equipment will be needed to get them back onto the tracks. Fortunately, grain was the only cargo on the southbound train. In 1991 a train went off the tracks on that same loop and spilled an enormous amount of Metam Sodium into the Sacramento River, killing all aquatic life downriver as far as Lake Shasta.
