Two tiny school districts, Whitmore Elementary and Mountain Union, will merge into one entity to improve efficiency. The change is set to occur on July 1st of 2027. Whitmore currently has 64 students and mountain union has 70. A new 5 member board of trustees will be elected next November to govern the new district. Although the merger will cause the Shasta County Office of Education to lose annual state funding of $358,000 the change will be worth it, according to administrators of both schools. The last time a merger was done in Shasta County, it was the formation of the Gateway District in 1992.
