Update: 8 Skiers Killed In Avalanche Near Lake Tahoe

The victims of a deadly avalanche in California’s Sierra Nevada include a group connected to a skiing academy near Lake Tahoe. Eight people died in the avalanche that hit Tuesday morning. Authorities say one other person is missing and presumed dead. Six others were found alive. Authorities said Wednesday that the eight victims were found fairly close together in the mountains near Castle Peak. The group, which was finishing up a three-day backcountry ski trip when the avalanche hit, has deep ties to the alpine community in nearby Lake Tahoe. A sheriff says one of the victims was married to a member of a backcountry search and rescue team.
