The Redding City Council has unanimously approved $40.000 to pay for the demolition of a troubled building on Industrial Street, the site of the former Bert and Ernie’s Bar. Local business owners have expressed relief at the decision, seeing it as a long-awaited solution to ongoing problems. The vacant building has been a source of concern due to its history of fires and trespassing, with the most recent fire in December requiring 24 firefighters and over two hours to control. City leaders believe that demolishing the structure is the quickest way to remove the hazard and prevent further issues. The $40,000 cost will not come from the city’s General Fund but from salary savings within the Development Services Department.
