The deadly shooting this week at the public library in Chico could have been much worse if the killer had known more about the shotgun he used. District Attorney Mike Ramsey says that assessment is based on witness accounts. He was apparently unaware that the Remington 20 gauge pump action shotgun he used had a capacity to hold six shells. He fired eight rounds, but each time he fired he would discharge the spent shell, pull another live one from his pocket, load it and shoot again. The slow process is likely the reason that only two people were killed. They were 74-year-old Robert Johnson and 46-year-old Jacob Hull. Due to the likelihood that the shooter was at least partly motivated by a desire for notoriety, he is no longer being named by KQMS. The suspect was arraigned Thursday on two counts of murder with enhancements. He did not enter a plea. He’s being held without bail.
