One person died in a 17-vehicle pileup near Lakehead on Tuesday afternoon. An intense hailstorm led to the chain reaction crash on a difficult downhill curve on Southbound Interstate 5 between Gilman Road and Salt Creek. Big rigs jackknifed and passenger cars were unable to stop on the ice-covered pavement. A 49-year-old man in a Toyota was killed and several people were injured. The southbound side of the freeway was closed for about 5 hours.
