Update: Search Continues For Baby Swept Away In The Trinity River

A heart wrenching search continues in Trinity County for baby Oliver. At 1:35AM Thursday morning a Lexus sedan carrying three people from Shasta Lake City left Highway 299 a couple of miles east of Big Flat and went down a steep embankment into the Trinity River, where it became submerged. There were three people in the car from Shasta Lake City: a young couple and their 9-month-old baby boy. The 21-year-old mother was driving and was seatbelted. The 19-year-old father was not wearing a seatbelt. They were both injured. As the car became submerged the mother managed to get the baby unbuckled and out of his seat. She handed him to the father, who tried to swim with him to safety but the strong river current was too much and the baby was pulled from his grasp. Search and rescue teams and volunteers have spent the last four days searching downriver amid extremely difficult terrain.
