There was a fatal crash south of Lakehead Wednesday. At 11:30AM a 2012 Kia was southbound on Interstate 5 between the Salt Creek Road and Gilman Road exits with 81-year-old Aleen Green driving and 65-year-old Peggy Sue Whitehurst in the passenger seat. The car was in the slow lane when green allowed it to drift into the fast lane heading straight toward the median wall. Green tried to steer back to the right but overcorrected and lost control. The car spun around and struck the wall, then spun back across both lanes and onto the shoulder, striking a rock embankment and overturning. Both Green and Whitehurst had to be extricated by emergency personnel and they were transported to Mercy Medical Center. Green suffered a broken back. Whitehurst died from trauma to her head and torso.
